What a fun day reading magazines and discovering parts of a magazine. It was nice to take a break from our activities and do something different. The kids loved choosing their own books and learning how to read a magazine... you don't have to read from cover to cover! I am so thankful for all my volunteers!
I have loved the feedback on the fluency work we have been doing with the 3rd and 4th graders. It seems like it has really been beneficial! Thank you! The video below will explain how to use the fluent chunk work that you will find in most 3rd and 4th grade folders. If you don't read with a 3rd or 4th graders, you can skip watching this! However, similar work can be done with the shorter texts of our 1st and 2nd graders! I don't know how to get a better first picture... ugh... by my next video... I will figure it out!!

As you have seen in Read with Me... we try to have our kids read at an instructional or independent level and readjust if the book is too hard.
This is a great article that explains why it is so important to have them reading the correct level, as well as how to determine if it is a just right book.
For the most part, with 1st and 2nd grade, we have this dialed in. There is a link below that goes into more detail about decodable text which is what our new books provide.
Since 3rd and 4th graders are bringing in the book of their choice, it is important for me to know if you feel they are reading books that are too hard. The second link below will take you to the article about Just Right Books and appropriate levels.

As we hear some our kids read... it feels pretty monotone. Here is a great coaching video to show you ways that you can support your kiddos with bringing the story alive!
We are increasing our exposure to High Frequency Words for our RWM kids this year.
1st grade has 7 lists that we expect them to know by the end of the year. After you have heard them read a Set list 2-3 separate days with 100% accuracy, they can color their rainbow and move to the next list. It will take a few weeks to work through each list!
It's okay... we have all year!
2nd grade has weekly words they are expected to read and spell. During your time with your student, please just check each word for reading. We don't have time to do the spelling but the teachers appreciate the reading of the words!
3rd and 4th grade, please read through the list when you have time. Highlight the words they know. Then you can keep going back to the list to review the words they don't know.

As I have been pulling together material for the 1st and 2nd graders... I am finding I need to change the format we were using just a bit. If you have a 1st grader, please watch this video. There are many reasons why students are not fluent readers. It is a complicated term and it is important to dig into the different reasons why they are "slower" when they read. Here a few ways to help them with their fluency. Next week, we will touch decoding words which is often why their fluency is low.
Your first time with your student will just be a get to know you time. I will have a sheet in their folder/box to guide your conversation!
Most students are starting today with me. We will just be running through the ins and outs of Read with Me. Below is the Read with Me training as a reminder. So excited to get started!
Starting this fall, we will be increasing the support we are giving our Read with Me volunteers. Weekly I will be placing either a video or a written tip to support your students. We want you to feel like you have the tools to support the readers you are working with! We hope this is a place you can explore and learn new techniques!
